From Weeds to Worms A Power Point Presentation On Interdependence in an Ecosystem Martha Feld Antic Spirits
It’s morning! The early bird is looking for his worm.
Breakfast time! What did the worm have for breakfast? What do plants eat?
Producers • Plants are called producers. • Why? Plants use the energy of the sun, the nutrients of the earth, water, and air to produce food for themselves. • Plants are the source of food for other organisms called consumers.
Consumers Living things that eat other living things are called consumers. Some consumers eat animals. Some consumers eat plants. Some consumers eat plants and animals.
Predators and Prey A living thing that catches and eats another living thing is called a predator. The living that that is caught and eaten is the prey.
Your job, Doctor, is to • Research the living thing assigned to your group. • Describe the needs of the organism. • Connect the organism with the levels above and below it on the food chain. • Synthesize a presentation. • Present your slide show to the class.

Practice to see what you have learnedfrom “Weeds to Worms”about the Interdependence of Living Things What does a cow eat? Is a cow a consumer or a producer? If we eat hamburger from the cow, is the cow a predator or a prey? What does a fox eat? If a fox eats a rabbit, is the fox a predator or a prey? Is the fox a consumer or a producer? What does a woodpecker eat? Is a woodpecker a consumer or a producer? If the woodpecker eats the insects in the tree bark, is the woodpecker a predator or a prey? What does a chipmunk eat? Is a chipmunk a consumer or a producer? If a hawk eats the chipmunk, is the chipmunk a predator or a prey? What does a dandelion eat? Is a dandelion a consumer or a producer? Since the dandelion does not have to be caught, the dandelion is neither a predator nor a prey. What does an earthworm eat? Is an earthworm a consumer or a producer? If a robin eats the earthworm, is the earthworm a predator or a prey? What might happen if one of the living things is removed from the ecosystem? How important is each member of the ecosystem to us as human beings?
