Must • USE: It expresses obligation, it’s your duty to do something, you are obligated to do something. Affirmative Examples: • You must wear a helmet when you ride a motorcycle. • You must use a seatbelt when you are driving. • She must be back soon this night, because it’s a rule in her home. MUSTN’T ( must not ) : It expresses obligation, it’s a forbidden to do something, you are not allowed to do something. It’s against the rules. Negative Examples: • You mustn’t feed the animals in the zoo. • You mustn’t use mobile phones in a bank. • She mustn't be absent in class, because she has a lot of absences, and she will not have the right to apply the final test.
Oughtto • USE: express obligation Examples: • Roberto ought to be in the plane by now. ( affirmative) • Roberto oughtn’t to be in the plane by now. ( negative) • I ought to work in the hospital. • She ought to go to the mall. • My family and I ought to visit my grandmother every weekend.
Have to • USE: it expresses need. Examples: • My mother has to buy some more bread for tonight’s dinner. • I can’t stay longer in the party. I have to come back to my home early, because I have a visit tonight. • I have to completemy homework or my parents won’t let me to go to the pub. • She has to worktomorrow. If you use in negative form, it expresses a lack of need. • You don’t have to wash the dishes. • She doesn’t have to do an exam • I don’t have to get upearly because it’s a holiday tomorrow.
Form: Haveto / has to • Questions: • Do you have to work tonight? Yes, I do / No, I don’t • Does your mother have to wash the dishes? Yes, she does / No, she doesn’t
Needto USE: it expresses a need. Examples: • He needs to buy some petrol. • He doesn’t need to buy some petrol, he has already bought some. • Does he need to buy some petrol? Yes, he does / No, he doesn’t. • I need to work extra hours. • My parents need to have a break. • She needs to study for her tests, because she has failed twice. • Does he need tobuy some food ? Yes, he does / No, he doesn’t.
In our company we need to have more offices. • In our company we need to be punctual to start checking customers’ problems online.
