Design Principles • Modular and expandable • Comprised of “learning modules” that can be combined to create courses • Thematic coherence • Overarching themes motivate modular combinations • Improvable • Users can suggest links, examples, additional readings, etc. • Theoretical critiques can be added to build better theories
Constructing knowledge domains… • Process of curriculum development is modeled on “constructivist” theory of education • Users* develop modules, combine them into courses, and apply to novel settings • Knowledge is constructed along the way *Architecture does not distinguish creators from users (just like with open source software). Users can be “experts” and “students” at the same time.
Practices called “applications” • Software architecture typically has a kernel (central operations) and expandable modules (new applications) • Applications often called features… these are the new functionality of the system • Analogy: New practices that emerge from our school are “applications” of knowledge-base
