Utilising international good practice: Why you should take that trip Sarah Sutton Clinical Librarian University Hospitals Leicester
What I am going to talk about • Vision • Where should you go? • Finding your niche • Benefits
Have a vision • Know what you want to do • Think about what may help you get it • Keep an open mind • Share your idea – others may find solution
Choose ExcellenceYou could choose a great conference? The next CL conference will be at ICML 2009EAHIL will also be taking partLots of other world leading medical librarians
Choose excellence • Or a study tour of cutting edge institutions • RCH Guidelines pages superb • Good quality guidelines • Well presented – interactive and printable • Attended guidelines meeting with ED clinicians • Did presentation, toured library, met library staff
Monash Institute of Health Services Research • Leaders in evidence based medicine • Visited hospital library • Training sessions for medical students • All in one day
Get a niche • PDAs not popularly used in UK when we started – so cutting edge • May get free resources to trial • Be in right place and grab that opportunity • Lots of work but does open doors • Clinicians see you as expert
Clinical Librarianship – another excellent niche • Again not a lot of CLs around when the UHL project started • Get a high profile • Maintain it!
Agree to do presentations • Get yourself out there and seen as an expert • If you present on subject you are an expert • Go on training to improve your skills if you need to
Do some research • Cochrane Systematic Review – originally done in 2002, updated 2006 • Written by theatre nurses originally – one now a Professor at DMU • Got funding from Cochrane to do research into something they wanted to know about – real interest • Travels the world to speak to conferences and as expert witness!
Benefits • There should be benefits to both sides for a study tour • We all gained from mine – Anne and Catherine, who I met at Monash are leading workshops at this conference • Cathy now attends guidelines meeting – got access when she said I was visiting and interested in guidelines • RCH considering CL pilot • CL appointed at RMH • IP Medline on OVID • Investigated electronic signatures for ILL
Use your findings • Special link to Children’s Guidelines • List of all guidelines not needle in haystack – DMS • I have had web training and am setting up a patient information page for children’s
