  2. Introduction • Indirect drug induced effect caused by a rxn to bacterial endotoxins or microbiel Ag’s liberated by the distruction of microorganisms • Lucio’s phenomenon

  3. History • Jarisch Adolf Herxheimer • Karl Hexheimer

  4. Aetiopathogenesis • Release of endotoxin of the spirochaetal breakdown products following treatment. These products are reacting with sensitised syphilitic to produce exacerbation of the lesion. • Due to stimulation of the spirochaetes and inadequate education. Endotoxin of the bacteria semi-permeable membrane regulating shed Death of the organism

  5. Clinical Manifestations • Flu-like symtoms : • Fever • Mylagia • Headache • HR • Respiratory Rate

  6. Lab Results • Increased Neutrophils • Decreased Lyphocytes • Decreased Eosinophils

  7. Treatment • Resolves on its own • Bedrest • Asprin • No steriods • Continued antibiotics
