BEFORE WE START... • There are a few major things about the Renaissance that we need to know before we dive in… • So, some major things that happened: • A rise in Humanism (Focus on the Human instead of the Spiritual) • A newfound appreciation and love for Greek and Roman art and culture • Innovation and Discovery • Growth of Commercialism • Creation of the Middle Class

MUSIC OF THE RENAISSANCE • The Printing Press made music available across the world • Sheet music, when able to be mass-produced, made it easy for music to now be heard around the world • This made it easier for a song to become popular!
NEW INSTRUMENTS • Music was composed mainly for? • The Church, of course! • However, there were many new genres and ways of composition that came about in the Renaissance • 15th Century— control was taken by Northern European/English composers

MUSIC PRINTING • Before 1501, music was all either copied by hand or taught by ear • In 1501, Petrucci published the first ever collection of polyphonic music • Can you imagine a world where you might only hear your favorite song a few times in your life? • Now, people could finally have written music— they could learn to play it en masse and music could be spread around the world
INSTRUMENTS • The viola de gamba was the new instrument created in the Renaissance • Instruments could now be played by amateur musicians as long as they had money • Instruments include: • Lute • Recorder • Organ • Harpsichord
