Ch.36 Global Interdependence Main Idea: New technologies have brought people around the world closer to one another and improved their lives. The world’s economies have also grown closer to one another. Nations around the world have worked together to try to bring some peace and end terrorism. Because of technology, the world’s cultures have more influence on one another now
Solar System and Beyond • Cooperation in Space: soviets and Americans began working together in space • International Space Station (ISS): built by U.S and Russia plus 14 other nations to use together for experiments • Info on Venus and other planets in the universe have been gathered • U.S. Pathfinder: landed on mars in 97 • Hubble Telescope: created by NASA and ESA (European space agency) and sends pictures back from all over the universe
Global Communications • Satellites have helped improve communication • Brought the world within a phone call away • Allows us to see events from all over the world (T.V./Satellites) such as the world cup • Computers: once the size of a classroom can now fit in the palm of your hand • Internet: great way to communicate and find useful information or to share it • Marketing! (Business)
Changes in Human Life • Advances in medicine have improved quality of life and expectancy • Microscopes, lasers, and ultrasound have allowed for new advance life saving surgeries • 1980s: genetics: study of heredity helped to bring breakthroughs in medicine as well • Cloning: using DNA to make copies • Leads to breakthroughs in agriculture
Green Revolution • 1960s in Asia • Scientists created a campaign in an attempt to promote an increase in food production worldwide • Use of fertilizers, pesticides, and disease resistant crops • Significance: helped increase crop production and prevent famines in parts of the world • Negatives: chemicals in fertilizers may cause cancer and pollute the environment. Poor farmers could not afford the expensive new advancements and did not benefit from the revolution
Types of Nations • Developed Nations: industrialized countries with good transportation, businesses, and advanced production of goods • Emerging Nations: those in the process of becoming industrialized • Major Change: jobs began to move from developed nations to emerging one (Outsourcing) for eager workers who would work for less leading to bigger profits for the manufacturers • Third World Nations: Countries struggling with poverty, hunger, and prosperity
Economic Globalization • Global Economy: Refers to all financial interactions among people, businesses, and governments that cross international borders (country to country) • Ex: Huge Cargo ships bring goods in and to different countries all over the world • Significance: countries can get goods from other countries cheaper than if they had to make them or get goods they do not have at all or enough of!!!! (ex: oil)
Multinational Corporations • Companies that work in several different countries such as Exxon Mobil and General Motors and Ford • These companies choose places where natural resources and the cost of making their good is the cheapest to maximize their profit of their final product
Free Trade • Elimination of trade barriers such as tariffs among nations (MAJOR GOAL of globalization) • WTO: world trade organization: ensures trade runs smoothly and freely as possible between nations • European Economic Community (EEC) and European Union (EU): members cooperate with each other to promote free trade • NAFTA: North American Free Trade Agreement that was inspired by the EU and is the elimination of tariffs and trade restrictions among Canada, U.S., Mexico, Latin America, and the South Pacific
Globalization Pros and Cons • Pros: free flow of goods promotes economic growth and has increased the standard of living across the world. Promotes peace through trade and creates jobs and creates a sense of world community • Cons: some feel it has only benefited developed countries and has been damaging to poor countries. Takes paid jobs from people in developed nations. Breaks down local cultures
