  2. Temptation • What is it? peirasmos – “a trial or proving” (Strong 3986) • James 1:12 • In what ways are we tempted? 1 John 2:14-16; James 1:14 • Lust of the flesh • Lust of the eyes • Vainglory of life • It’s based on our desires

  3. Temptation • Who tempts us? James 1:13; John 8:44 • God does not tempt us • Satan ultimately does • Remember Job!

  4. How Do We Overcome? • By the blood of the Lamb – Leviticus 17:10ff • Blood had to be spilled – Romans 6:23 • Animals couldn’t do it – Hebrews 10:4 • Only Christ could – Hebrews 9:11-14 • His blood is precious – 1 Peter 1:19 • Has cleansing power like no other – 1 John 1:7-9

  5. How Do We Overcome? • The testimony of the Word of God • Testimony – marturia – “what one testifies” • The Word is a weapon – Ephesians 6:13-17 • It pierces to a fundamental level – Hebrews 4:12 • We can overcome – 1 Corinthians 10:13; Acts 27:25

  6. How Do We Overcome? • A willingness to disregard our lives • Many sacrificed their lives – Hebrews 11:35-40 • Stephen – Acts 7:56-60 • James – Acts 12:1 • This is true faith • Action item – Revelation 2:10 – “… faithful until death”

  7. Conclusion • These saints had all they needed to overcome • We have the same • Not a member of His church? – become one, escape the accuser of your soul • Already a member? – You can overcome when sin and temptation rises
