  1. Vial Organic Chemistry Staff DevelopmentJanuary 5, 2006Lincoln High School

  2. Outline • Advanced chemistry at LHS • Overview of Vial Organic chemistry • Equipment and materials • Extensions for Vial Organic labs TLC & Rf Calculations GC/MS & Molecular Structures • Vial Organic labs with advanced chemistry students

  3. Advanced Chemistry at LHS Advanced Chemistry consists of 1 semester of organic chemistry and one semester of biochemistry Semester 1: Unit 1. Overview of atomic structure & bonding Unit 2. Alkanes: structure, nomenclature & reactions -an introduction to functional groups Unit 3. Alkenes & Alkynes: structure, nomenclature & reactions -an introduction to organic mechanims Unit 4. Oxygen & sulfur containing compounds -independent unit using organic chemistry books

  4. Advanced Chemistry at LHS Advanced Chemistry consists of 1 semester of organic chemistry and one semester of biochemistry Semester 2: Unit 5. Amino acids & proteins: structures -review of acid/base chemistry Unit 6. Enzymes & vitamins -introduction to enzyme kinetics (Henderson/Hasselbalch) Unit 7. Carbohydrates Unit 8. Lipids Unit 9. Nucleic Acids Unit 10. Metabolism

  5. Overview of Vial Organic chemistry Vial Organic provides an opportunity for high school students to explore organic reactions by: 1. reducing cost by replacing expensive glassware with reactions vials, 2. reducing the amount of chemicals as a result of microscale reactions, 3. reducing the need for expensive electronic analysis devices, 4. minimizing hazards through the use of safer chemicals and reaction procedures, 5. devising lab practices that fit within the constraints of a 50-minute lab period.

  6. Materials for Vial Organic chemistry • 2-dram reaction vials with Teflon-sealed caps • Heating source for hot water baths (suggest hotplates) • Pipets (disposable & graduated) with pipet pumps • Organic chemicals (purchased through Flinn) • Drying agents (Na2SO4 or MgSO4) • Special hanger for vials • Capillary tubes • Evaporator, centrifuge, TLC chamber, TLC plates, & other common glassware.

  7. Extensions for Vial Organic chemistry TLC & Rf Calculations -Reviews of Rf calculations and relative Rf values as a means of comparison -changing TLC solvents to examine resolution of solutes & collaborative discussions GC/MS & Molecular Structures -Using cinnamaldehyde and its mass spectra, students can use ion fragments to deduce the molecular structure. Hydrolysis of Starch via acid hydrolysis and amylase -comparing the results of both and then changing conditions to assess amylase reaction rates, specifically denaturation.

  8. Practices in Vial Organic chemistry LHS Advanced Chemistry students: • Hong Dao • Eyob Meles • Truc Nguyen • Daniel Skomski • Melissa Test • Phong Tran
