  3. Cookies • Cookies are small text files which are stored by the web browser on a computer. A cookie has data that is used to identify the computer on which it is stored. Cookies have ID tags that are stored on the computer's browser directory or program data subfolders. • A new cookie gets created when anyone visits a page on the internet for the first time. This cookie collects the information that can be accessed by the website operator. It remembers a visitor’s registered login, theme selection, preferences and other customization functions.

  4. More about Cookies YELLOW • Cookies are most commonly used to track website activity. When anyone visits a site, the server assigns him a cookie that acts as his identification card. Upon each return visit to that site, his browser passes that cookie back to the server. This enables a web server to gather information regarding which web pages are visited the most, as well as which pages have received the most repeat hits. • Cookies also play their part in online shopping. Online stores often use cookies to record any personal information that a visitor/online shopper enters, as well as any items in his electronic shopping cart. This ensures that one doesn't need to re-enter this information each time that one visits the same site.

  5. More about Cookies • In order to provide personalized web pages, servers can use cookies. When anyone selects preferences on a certain site that uses this option, the server places the relevant information in a cookie. When that person returns, the server uses this information that is in a cookie to create a customized page for him.

  6. Website and Web Hosting Since cookies are related to websites, it is imperative to understand a bit about websites. A website is a collection of web pages that have related content. It is located under a single domain name and is identified by a common domain name. Every website is hosted on the server of a web hosting company. When anyone refers to “Best Window Cloud Server Hosting” or “Media Streaming Servers Hosting” or even “Best Windows Reseller Hosting Company” they are essentially referring to web hosting companies or their services. These web hosting companies provide various types of hosting and different packages for each type.

  7. Use of Cookies • Cookies are meant to be used for the following purposes which have been mentioned in no particular order- • Session management. Cookies enable websites to recognize the visitors and recall their individual login information as well as their preferences. • Personalization.  Cookies are used to personalize the visitor’s sessions. This is done mainly for customized advertising. Cookies use the data that they gather, to help deliver targeted advertisements. • Tracking. Shopping websites use cookies as well. It is done to track items that the visitors viewed previously. This allows the website to suggest other products/services that the visitor might find interesting, to ensure that they continue shopping and buy more products. • Even web developers reap the benefits of this set-up. Cookies are stored on the user’s device locally. This frees storage space on a website’s servers.

  8. Different types of Cookies Different types of cookies are mentioned here and brief information is given about each, in no particular order.

  9. Session Cookies These are also called 'temporary cookies' and are used mostly on shopping websites or e-commerce websites. Session cookies help websites to recognize the visitors and the information provided when they browse a website. These cookies retain information about a visitor's activities only till the time they are on the website. These get deleted, once the web browser is closed.

  10. Permanent cookies These cookies are also referred to as 'persistent cookies'. These remain active even after the web browser has been closed. These can remember login details and passwords. This helps the visitors of the website as they don't need to re-enter these details every time that they use that particular site. As per law, permanent cookies must be deleted after every twelve months.

  11. Third-party cookies As the name makes it evident, third-party cookies are installed by third-parties. These serve the purpose of collecting certain information about and from the website users in order to use it for their own research into various patterns related to consumer behaviour, their demographics and/or their spending habits. These help advertisers to market their products and services to their target audience.

  12. Flash cookies Another name for these cookies is 'super cookies'. These are independent from the web browser. These are meant to be stored permanently on a user's computer. It is important to remember that these remain on a user's computer even when all other cookies have been deleted from his web browser.

  13. Zombie cookies Zombie cookies are a kind of flash cookie. These get re-created automatically after a user deletes these. This makes these difficult to detect as well as manage. The flip side is that these can be used to install malicious software onto a user's device.

  14. General Rule on Cookies • Every website must: • Inform people about the use of cookies as well as the type of cookies that are being used. • Explain the purpose of the cookies that are being used. • Take the website user's consent to store cookies on his device.

  15. 1-800-123 -8156 Whoa! That’s a big number, aren’t you proud?
