  1. Waves

  2. What is a wave? Waves move Energy. A disturbance that propagates through space and time transferring energy.

  3. Transverse Wave In a transverse wave, the particles move perpendicular to the direction of the wave

  4. Terms to Know • Amplitude – maximum displacement of wave -Height or depth • Crest – Top-most portion of the wave • Trough – Bottom-most portion of the wave • Wavelength – distance between waves (crest to crest or trough to trough)

  5. Examples

  6. More Terms! • Period – time it takes for a single wave to go by • Frequency – how many waves pass in a second Period and frequency are reciprocals

  7. Practice problems • Period and frequency

  8. Longitudinal Waves • In a longitudinal (or compression) wave, the particles move parallel to the direction of the wave.

  9. Terms to know • Amplitude, frequency, and period apply to both wave types. • http://funwaves.wikispaces.com/5.+Longitudinal+wave

  10. Wave Speed • Wave Speed = wavelength x frequency • V=λxf • Wave speed depends on the medium • Practice!

  11. Properties of Sounds Waves • Amplitude • Frequency • Volume • Pitch • Which of the Terms go together?

  12. So if a wave speed depends on the medium, what happens when a wave encounters a different medium? • Reflection • Refraction
