1. Introduction • The emergence of Web 2.0 – a change in all web based sectors • User-based interactive systems • The library environment- following the trend and accepting Web 2.0 • Library 2.0 – facing change and new challenges
2. Library 2.0 - definitions • “constant beta” – never finished and ever changing definition, hard to set up a standard • Constant features : • an user- oriented environment, developed by users through participation and feedback • Implementation of Web 2.0 tools and technology (blogs, wikis, RSS, tags, etc.) • Traditional services-> digital services • Generation X (pre-digital) -> generation Y (digital natives)
2. 1. Library 2.0 - tasks Adaptation (not termination) of traditional services Implementation of new services Responding to new information needs in accordance with users’ demands
2. 2. Library 2.0- features • Four essential elements (Maness, 2006) • The library has to focus on it’s user • The library has to offer a multimedia experiance • The library is socially diverse • Libraries are the innovators of a community Seven buliding blocks (Holmberg et al., 2009.) Interactivity Users Participation Libraries and library services Web and Web 2.0 Social aspects Technology and tools
Library 2.0 – features Bonariabiancu 2006 http://www.flickr.com/photos/bonaria/111856839/
3. Catalogue 2.0 – OPAC 2.0 Opening the catalogue outside the library walls (Google, Amazon, social platforms, etc.) Library as a “platform” User participation inside the catalogue (tagging, commenting, reviews, etc.) Enabling discovery – ranking, relating, recommending (Dempsey, 2006.)
3.1. Catalogue 2.0 in practice • Ann Arbor District Library (http://www.aadl.org/catalog) • Social OPAC or SOPAC • “social”- interaction and collaboration offered to users • Applications normally found on social platforms were integrated into the catalogue
3.1. Catalogue 2.0 in practice • Lamson Library, Plymouth University (http://library.plymouth.edu/read/223702) • Scriblio • More browsing and searching options • Masup of information
3.1. Catalogue 2.0 in practice • WorldCat.org • (http://www.worldcat.org/) • Implemetnation of technology used on Facebook
4. Issues and negative aspects • High expectations in users due to the efficiency of other information systems, which is still lacking in the Library 2.0 • Evaluation and inclusion of collaborative knowledge into the libraries • Social software in the Library catalogue? • Evaluation of content? • Incompatibility of software and formats • Education of librarians and users
5. Risks in the Web 2.0 implementation (Kelly, Bevan and Akerman, 2008.) • Sustainability risks • Preservation risks • Human factor • Accessibility issues
6. Conclusion • Libraries are changing and adapting • More user- oriented • Implementation of Web 2.0 interaction – delivery of quality information in close interaction with users • Still a work in progress
