Let’s back track for a minute! How do we draw food chains? Bring out a piece of paper.
Please write a food chain including acorns, a squirrel, and a hawk. • Please write a food chain including seaweed, a small fish, a big fish, and a shark. • Please write a food chain including weeds, a rabbit, and a fox. • Please write a food chain including a seal, a small fish, algae, and a shark. • Please write a food chain including an owl, seeds, a mouse, and mushrooms.
BUT. The same is true the OTHER WAY… • If weather conditions are REALLY good in a particular ecosystem…there can be an increase in the amount of producers.
If we have (10)MORE producers…there is (11)MORE for our consumers to eat. If our consumers eat MORE…they can live longer AND have more offspring.
ROAD check • What happens to the frogs if there are more leaves? • The slugs would die off because there are no more leaves. Less slugs mean less food for frogs. • Frog populations will decrease.

Create a Food Chain • Must have 4+ organisms • Add plants of various types. Label them producers • Add consumers showing links between producers. • Label all of the consumers (herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores) On the back of your picture, answer these 4 questions… • What would happen to your producer if your final consumer increased? • What would happen to your first consumer if your producers increased? • What would happen to your secondary consumer if your first consumer decreased? • What would happen to your secondary consumer if your first consumer increased??
