1.Aspect of setting • Find a something in the identified passage that tells you something about the setting. Eg the river itself Quote an example that refers to this. b. Refer to the detail about the setting from a. then explain how it suggests danger. Can also discuss other egs which refer to the same aspect of setting in a way which suggests danger too.
Setting contd. c. Find other details in this bit of the passage which also suggest danger. • the character’s feelings about the trip beforehand • dialogue – the safety instructions, imperatives • Mention of equipment • Metaphor describing rapids
d.Text as a whole • Write a clear opening thesis statement Eg The writer helps us to understand that the river rafting trip is exciting and potentially dangerous through their use of first person point- of- view and imagery.
Whole text contd. • Discuss one of the points you have mentioned in thesis statement (intro sentence) • It is written in first person so we see the trip through the eyes of the narrator and share in their experience of the trip first hand . Insert an eg then explain that eg in terms of how it shows excitement /danger etc. • Could add another eg which you then analyse too.
Whole text contd • Discuss the second point you mentioned in thesis statement. • The writer’s use of imagery also conveys a sense of excitement and danger. The metaphor …. Insert eg and explain how it shows danger/excitement etc. • Repeat processs with a further eg….
2. Character • a. Find a something in the identified passage that tells you something about the narrator’s character. Eg anxious about trip Quote an example that refers to this. b. Refer to the detail about the character from a. then explain how it suggests anxiety. Can also discuss other egs which refer to the same aspect of character in a way which suggests anxiety or nervousness too.
Character continued • Carry on in the same way as for question 1 except this time you are looking at character. • Make sure you use different examples to support your comments so that you are not repeating material.
