Genesis, chapter 9 • NIV Genesis 9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2 The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands.
Genesis, chapter 9 • Man was given fruit to eat with its seeds, not meat. Here we see a change of diet. Perhaps, the post-flood world is less hospitable to life so that this supplementary diet might be needed.
St. Ives and the Seagulls • Seagulls knew to stay away from St. Ives, until one tested the waters. As people no longer shot them, the birds lost their fear of people and became a nuisance. Many do not appreciate the intelligence of animals and how they can share fear of people through generations.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. 4 "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it.
Meat with Blood • Since sin, there has always been this pagan belief that consuming blood captures an animal’s life energy. God does not tolerate this pagan belief. • It is not just a hygienic issue. Meat changes its chemistry when cooked.
You Kill Only What You Eat • Animals are not in danger of hell. People are. • The death of animals is only to serve people carrying out the sacred purposes of Yaweh.
Humane Treatment of Animals • Jacob chastised Levi and Simeon for inhumane treatment of animals. • Genesis 49:6 Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
Humane Treatment of Animals • An animal was not to be eaten with its mother’s milk. The sentiment is respect for the animal consumed. • Exodus 23:19 "Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. • GOD’S LAW – He requires the life of animal or man who kills man. • Why would death penalty make sense to ancient world?
No one should benefit from an animal who has killed a person • Exodus 21:29 If, however, the bull has had the habit of goring and the owner has been warned but has not kept it penned up and it kills a man or woman, the bull must be stoned and the owner also must be put to death.
Genesis, chapter 9 Romans 13:4 For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
Capital Punishment? • One cannot readily practice on their own. They must be regularly called to a position (Romans 13:5) or clearly be in a situation to protect the innocent. • The government can use this in their freedom to decide what is needed to curb evil. • Not too long ago, many on death row in Illinois were found to be innocent through DNA. Clearly, the system was not just.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 6 "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man. 7 As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it."
Genesis, chapter 9 • 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 "I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with every living creature that was with you-- the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you-- every living creature on earth.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth." 12 And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come:
Covenant? • What does this mean? • A sealed relationship with promises.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds,
Genesis, chapter 9 • 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth." 17 So God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth."
Somewhere under the rainbow… • NIV Ezekiel 1:28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. When I saw it, I fell facedown, and I heard the voice of one speaking.
Somewhere under the rainbow… • NIV Revelation 4:3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow, resembling an emerald, encircled the throne.
Somewhere under the rainbow… • NIV Revelation 10:1 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars.
Cleansed with Fire • The earth will not be flooded in the same way as the deep recesses of the ocean were formed to hold the water. • However, the earth will be cleansed with fire on the Last Day.
Cleansed with Fire • 2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
Cleansed with Fire • 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. • Cleansing with fire is permanent and more thorough.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth.
Name meanings • Japheth – Persuasive. • Shem – Known (it literally means name or renown). • Ham – Warm, hot.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside.
Too Much To Drink • We are not led to know whether this was intentional or not. • Evidently, Ham got a big kick out of this. BUT, Noah was the source of blessing, a preacher of righteousness, and it is an evil to speak evil of one’s parents.
Respect Always Due • Exodus 21:17 "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death. • Miriam became a leper for speaking against the chosen prophet, Moses. • Bears mauled children who taunted Elisha.
Respect Always Due • Even Daniel and his companions showed respect to governing authorities that were pagan dictators. • 1 Peter 2:17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father's nakedness.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers." • CHILDREN LEARN FATHERS’ SINS UNTO THIRD AND FOURTH GENERATION.
Canaan’s Sin • CHILDREN LEARN FATHERS’ SINS UNTO THIRD AND FOURTH GENERATION. • Noah prophesied that Canaan would learn and carry on this sin of defiance of the Lord’s chosen. • Canaan’s descendants would face Judgment Day ahead of time as the Israelites would possess their land.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 26 He also said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. 27 May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave.“ • CHILDREN LEARN FATHERS’ RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Japheth • When one considers how Japheth’s descendants covered the vast majority of the world, surely this prophecy was kept.
Genesis, chapter 9 • 28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years. 29 Altogether, Noah lived 950 years, and then he died.
Only Canaan Was Cursed • Godless preachers and teachers have used this incident to deny Christ’s unconditional love to other descendants of Ham. • Reflect on slavery and how godless slave owners used the Scriptures to justify their sin.
