Genesis, chapter 2 • Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
I think C.S. Lewis got it kinda right. • Mankind had a communion with God and creation that we can not possibly imagine.
Weh-Cahl. Sehvahahm. • Vasty array??? • Vast array is not a good translation. The Hebrew says Zava-am. • Zava-am. Sava-am. It is a term that means varying orders and types. In time, this would refer to military ranks of soldiers and servants in armies. All hosts in varying orders in heavens and on earth are mentioned. • This verse clearly shows angels were created during the Six Days.
Genesis, chapter 2 • God rested. • God ceased. • God stopped.
Genesis, chapter 2 • 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens-- 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground--
Genesis, chapter 2 • 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. • The fist account was a cosmic point of view. • This second account is a anthropocentric view.
The Lord Elohim formed the ADAM from the ADAMAH and NEPHESHED into the face the NEPHESH of life then ADAM was a living NEPHESH. NEPHESH is an interesting term. It is a term for a living and breathing soul, person, or creature. • Proverbs 20:27 The lamp of the LORD searches the NEPHESH of a man; it searches out his inmost being. • Genesis 9:10 and with EVERY CREATURE (NEPHESH) e that was with you-- the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you-- every living creature on earth. • Genesis 46:26 EVERY PERSON (NEPHESH) who went to Egypt with Jacob-- those who were his direct descendants, not counting his sons' wives-- EVERY PERSON (NEPHESH) numbered sixty-six.
Into the face of the man was breathed living breath. • John 20:22 And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. • Mankind is the image of God with His NEPHESH dwelling therein. We see a unique role and service of Yaweh in and through mankind -- Joyful fellowship and communion with the Lord. • MIGHTY BREATH? • Think of the Dedication of the Tabernacle and Temple. Think of Pentecost. Think of Ezekiel and the Valley of Dry Bones.
Genesis, chapter 2 • 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. • Eden means delight. Man is God’s steward on earth and had a close and inherent bond to the earth from which he had been formed.
Genesis, chapter 2 • Adam and Eve received a portion and so will you. • John 14:2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. • NIV John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
Genesis, chapter 2 • 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground-- trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. • Tree of Existence. Tree of Yada (Self-experience?).
Yadah / Ha-Yoda • It tends to mean experiential knowledge. This is knowledge that can only be gained through experience. • Its usage in the Bible is multiple. • Once someone experiences (is familiar) the Lord (His Word), they will be judged as to whether this knowledge is productive in their lives. Jeremiah 22:16 He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" declares the LORD.
The Tree of Life • The promise would mean to live forever with the Lord. • Here mankind is given free will. • “Life” has multiple implications. It means living, existence, and is also used for fellowship / community in some passages.
The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil • Here is mankind’s free will. Mankind can freely reject God’s presence and care for providence. • Mankind is allowed to touch, experience, and become self-reliant in discerning good and evil life for their own life as their own god.
Genesis, chapter 2 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.
Havalah Eurphrates Pishon Gihon Tigris Asshur Cush
Will you see this in the earth restored? • NIV Revelation 22:2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
From One River Comes Many • One river flows into others. This is against the norm of our present world.
Smaller Tributaries Larger Tributaries Seas Oceans What we know.
GREAT SPRINGS - River of Life from Garden of the Lord Four main branches Tributaries to water the whole of creation ?
NIV Revelation 21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. NIV Revelation 17:15 Then the angel said to me, "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.
Locations? • We are talking about a pre-flood world. Though names carried over, we do not know the exact locations. • After the Flood, the area immediately settled may have kept some names through Noah and reapplied them. • Like Neuendettslau, Ohio vs. Neuendettslau, Germany.
Genesis, chapter 2 • 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."
Genesis, chapter 2 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
Genesis, chapter 2 • God knew there is no other suitable helper. He allowed Adam to experience this truth throughout the day. • Ponder this for a second. He could have created Eve instantly.
Genesis, chapter 2 • 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
Genesis, chapter 2 • Sleep. She is a gift of God’s grace. • His joy is to provide for her as he would for himself.
Metered Poetry (if not song) 555 555 • The thrust of this poety is that ADAM claims EVE is to be loved as a dear and special part of his own body. • Genesis 2:23 And the man said, "This is AT LAST is bone FROM my bones, And flesh FROM my flesh; She shall be BEAR GOOD TIDINGS with SUCH PROCLAMATION as ISHA, Because FROM ISH such has been received.
Why Poetry? • Poetry is a monument for generations to come.
Genesis, chapter 2 • 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, 'for she was taken out of man." 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Genesis, chapter 2 • 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. • They confessed and knew they were made for each other.
Genesis, chapter 2 • The blessing was already given one chapter earlier. • NIV Genesis 1:28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
Genesis, chapter 2 • In Malachi chapter 2, God repeats that men are to be as gracious to their wives as they should expect grace for themselves AND He wants godly offspring from marriage. In marriage, one’s spouse becomes their highest calling under heaven.
Genesis, chapter 2 • Children thrive in a strong marriage so marriage is to be the higher calling. To love one’s marriage is to love one’s children. • Ask the average spouse what their ten chief priorities under heaven are. Where do think being a blessing to one’s spouse falls? This is a Fallen world from the what it was meant to be.
Genesis, chapter 2 • NIV Malachi 2:13 Another thing you do: You flood the LORD's altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer pays attention to your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands.
Genesis, chapter 2 • NIV Malachi 2:14 You ask, "Why?" It is because the LORD is acting as the witness between you and the wife of your youth, because you have broken faith with her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant.
Genesis, chapter 2 • NIV Malachi 2:15 Has not the LORD made them one? In flesh and spirit they are his. And why one? Because he was seeking godly offspring. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith with the wife of your youth. • It’s neat how marriage is at the beginning and end of the Old Testament.
