NOT JUST A FAD • 70’s Green was called “ethical consumerism” • 80’s was all about “ergonomics” • 90’s was all about A.D.A. • Now it’s time again to be all about Green. • But will it stay as a fad or be ingrained in Architecture Design? -Whitemeyer, David
A Sample of Human Waste • 3091 Active Landfills in U.S. –zerowastamerica.org • 40% of a landfill= construction waste. -Bittle • 8000 lbs of waste per 2000sq.ft. home! -Bittle • 13% (by weight) of Concrete wasted -Bossink • 29% of Stone Tablets wasted -Bossink
Advantages of Green • Recycled materials reduce space at landfills-Zerowasteamerica.org • Most waste is unused excess • A lot of materials are reusable • 2x4’s, Drywall, Brick, Glass, ect. • Minimal use=minimal waste • BETTER PLANNING • $$$ Buyback option for unused parts • $2000 saved per house -Bossink • Provides artistic possibilities • Different options for recylced parts
Advantage when done Voluntarily -Forsyth • Green policies can improve businesses image with the public. • Green practices can add marketing value to a product.
Mandatory? -Forsyth • Unless Federally mandated, it is subjected to “whims” of the populace • Not embraced during recessions • Cheaper to not be green? • If everyone has to do it, no price advantages.
Conclusion • The less waste, the more $$$ • Gains popularity as attention shifts to the planet’s condition. • Government incentives would entice business whereas regulations might chain them. • Should be an urgent enough of an issue to follow suit.
Shut up and Do it! -Whitemyer • Effort spent on preaching it should be spent on doing it. –Whitemyer • Start with Studio • Recycle your materials • Minimalize excess materials in planning • Practice this in the real world. • “Less is More” • Great P.R. • More Design Possibilities • Save $$$
