Background (3) Gaps KEPU (科普), Chinese Pinyin for “Public Appreciation of Science” (informal science education) • By December 2006, 452 KEPU websites are running normally. The number increases by 11% in a year, and accounts for 0.54‰ of China’s websites in total. • Web pages relevant to KEPU are increasing much slower compared with those of other types such as business and entertainment. Background (4) Possible Solutions for Bridging the Gap by CAS • Build strong partnership with scientists and encourage them to share research information. • Build a professional team (editor/web designer/IT engineer/scientist…) to “translate” research information for the use of science education. • Build web portals to offer categorical educational resources tailored for a variety of target audiences. • Update to “hook” return users.

Collaborative Web Portal for the future Vision CNIC will play a coordinating and leadership role among CAS research institutes in the development of a comprehensive collaborative web portal for promoting public appreciation of science, as well as facilitating science education by working with education practitioners in all settings.

Suggestion Hold discussions among participating academies of developing countries to address questions on how to build effective web portals to share information for the use of science education. Hold discussions on how to take joint actions and share educational resources for the public among participating academies. Based on the discussions above, build an effective mechanism to encourage participating academies to establish such web portals in their own countries, and share relevant resources and technologies in a more efficient way. Possible Gap? Can we overcome the barriers of language, culture, way of teaching science and sharing educational resources with the public? Cross-cultural Science Education
