Background • Population of the country is 4.6 million. • Spanish is the official language, and English is the second most common spoken language. • Christianity is the dominant religion and is very much integrated into the culture • Costa Rica has a nationalized health care system and care is available to all citizens and legal residents across the country • Ten major public hospitals – four in San Jose, including the Children’s Hospital – affiliated with the Costa Rican National Healthcare System
