Chronic Absences Corrected • Chronic Absentee Student absent 10% or more of school year for any reason EC Section 60901(c)(1) • Indicator of potential drop away/drop out • Chronic absence in 6th grade – most predictive indicator that a student will not graduate • Kindergarten and 1st Grade • 12% become proficient readers by 3rd grade • Higher levels of suspension and lower academic achievement in middle school
Focus on Early Intervention • Identify chronic absentees and potential chronic absentees in Kindergarten, 1st grade • Utilize the SARB process to develop intervention and support plan with monitoring component • Establish collaborative relationship with Police, Social Services, District Attorney and Probation • Include available services such as: Community Liaison, Counselor, Social Worker, Mental Health Provider, Psychologist, Special Ed.
Additional Monitoring and Support • All sites watch for chronic absentees at all grades • Utilize school site intervention process currently in place and/or SARB process as appropriate to address issues • Develop a plan to address 6th grade chronic absentees with a focus on a successful transition to middle school
Future Steps • Contact school districts that have been identified by CDE as 2013 Model School Attendance Review Board Programs to gather additional ideas. • Identify resources for school site administrators on improving attendance. • Continue with the district’s attendance incentive program for schools.
