  1. Math 5Coordinate Grids Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

  2. In this lesson we will how you can locate points on a coordinate grid.

  3. Divide each number by 10. 100 1000 230 1200 Math Warm-up

  4. Divide each number by 10. 100 1000 230 1200 Math Warm-up - ANSWERS 10 100 23 120

  5. In this lesson we will answer the question: How are ordered pairs of numbers represented on a coordinate grid? You will need a copy of the print out called M5L#43 coordinates-1 to use for this lesson. So pause the tape, print the handout, and then restart the tape.

  6. Vocabulary coordinate plane- is a flat surface formed by two intersecting, perpendicular lines. Each of these lines is called an axis. x-axis- The horizontal line. y-axis- The vertical line.

  7. Vocabulary Quadrants-The x-axis and the y-axis divide the coordinate plane into four areas. These areas are calledquadrants. Ordered Pairs- Digits that indicate where a point is located on a coordinate grid. Ex: (3,2)

  8. Connecting to Previous Learning A coordinate grid makes it easy to locate a point on a map. Start at 0. The ORDERED PAIR names a point on a coordinate grid. You may have used this skill while trying to locate a place on a map.

  9. Coordinate Grid: 1st Quadrant The numbers are all positive. How would we locate the ordered pair, (3,2)

  10. Document Camera Get your notebook and pencil ready. Make sure you have the Lesson # and date on your page. Use Coordinates handout

  11. In your Math Notebook Guided Practice Locate the ordered pairs: (2, 7) (6, 9) (4, 6)

  12. In your Math Notebook Guided Practice Write the ordered pairs for each letter: (R) (S) (T) S R T

  13. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Locate the ordered pairs: (3, 7) (9, 2) (8, 6)

  14. In your Math Notebook Independent Practice Write the ordered pairs for each letter: (W) (X) (Y) Y W X

  15. Lesson Review • A coordinate grid makes it easy to locate a point on a map. • Start at 0. You follow the 0 line to locate the 1st number, the x-coordinate in the ordered pair. • (3, 6) • The second number, the y-coordinate names the distance UP from the x-coordinate. • (3, 6)

  16. In your Math Notebook Quick Check

  17. In your Math Notebook Quick Check

  18. In your Math Notebook Quick Check - ANSWER

  19. In your Math Notebook (4,3) Quick Check

  20. Good Work with this lesson. Today you learned how to locate points on a coordinate plane.
