Week 6 Journal Questions (pg. 42) Turn in Reproductive Isolation Tri-fold into the basket!!! + Chapter 15 Assessment ?s (1-10) Tuesday: • The cuckoo bird has a mating song that is chirp-chirp-chiiiiirp. Whereas the mockingbird has a mating song that is tweet-tweet-chirp. Read the following scenario and explain in a complete sentence what type of reproductive isolation this is.
What is genetic equilibrium? • When allele frequencies remain the same • No change means no evolution
What are the conditions for genetic equilibrium? • Random mating • Large population • No immigration/ emigration • No mutations • No natural selection
What is genetic drift? • Changes in a small population’s allele frequency due to random chance • Not based on fitness
What causes genetic drift? • Natural disasters: hurricanes, volcano, tsunami, earthquakes, fire, etc. • Random Events: stepped on, ran over, picked up, etc.
What are the types of genetic drift? • Founder’s effect: subgroup of the population immigrates to and colonizes a new area, changes allele frequencies
What are the types of genetic drift? • Bottleneck effect: few survivors from an original population are left to reproduce.
What does genetic drift do to a population? • Decreases diversity within a population • Affects small populations
Genetic Drift WS (44) Roll dice put dot next to that # worm Example roll 3 put dot next to worm 3 Roll 5 more times (total 6 times) Color the next generation worms those colors with dots Repeat until you get to generation 4
Exit Ticket: At the bottom of today’s notes answer the following questions in complete sentences: Explain how genetic drift affects the diversity of a population. How does this affect the fitness of the population? Extra Homework : Chapter 16 Assessment ?s (pg. 413) Cornell Notes style; left ? Right answer
