The Role and Purpose of the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Registry • To collect data which will give an accurate picture of cancer in the population and to study the extent of the disease • Assist in epidemiological research • Evaluate the effect of treatment and the effect of screening programmes • Health care planning • Analysis and interpretation of the data

Objectives of the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Registry • To collect and process data from health institutions and medical practitioners in the public and private sectors which will give an accurate picture of cancer in the population. • To facilitate the exchange of information about cancer and the follow up of those persons diagnosed with cancer.   9. Objectives cont’d To facilitate monitoring of the incidence and prevalence of cancer and the determination of factors that affect incidence, prevalence morbidity and mortality, with particular emphasis on those relating to gender, age ethnicity.

Objectives cont’d • To provide health authorities with reliable data to facilitate the planning and administrative cancer services including cancer prevention and control. • To improve the accuracy of morbidity and mortality data relating to cancer by making notification of the diagnosis of cancer a requirement of all medical practitioners, diagnostic laboratories and hospitals in private and public sectors.

Statistics Between 1997 - 2006 there were 19,707 new cases and 12,610 deaths • Male cases – 10,166 Female – 9541 diff =625 Male deaths 6876 Females 5740 diff= 1,1 36 • Prostate Incidence and mortality 4185 and 2569 • Breast 2nd Incidence &Mortality 2934, 1323 • Cervix corpus Uteri and Ovary are included in top ten cancers (female reproductive organs)

Achievements (Regional) • Presentation of Trinidad and Tobago statistics at CHRC conference in Jamaica (2007). • Organized training on CanReg4 Programme (in Barbados for registrars from Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago (through Pan American Health Organization) (2008) • Training of personnel from Guyana and Barbados in the principles involved in setting up of Cancer Registration • One week Training programme of personnel in Grenada on setting up a Cancer Registry. Aug 2009

Achievements (International) • Participation in the field testing of the revised publication of ICD-O3 • Presented data and part of a panel at the 2nd African-American Caribbean Cancer Consortium in May of 2008 in Miami Florida (invited by the University of Pittsburg) • Data on Breast and Prostate Cancers from Trinidad and Tobago has been published by State University of New York (SUNY), Downstate School of Public Health in collaboration with the National Cancer Registry of Trinidad and Tobago . • Data on Head and Neck Cancers to be published soon

  17. Problems • Incomplete medical records resulting in the level of accuracy of data in Registry’s files being compromised • Discharge summaries not completed by Medical officers • Admission notes not complete • Poor compliance in reply to request for information • Non-inclusion in reputable international publication • Percentage of Death Certificates • Not enough support from IARC • Registries are not informed about changes in method of data collection and related matters.

  18. Current Needs • Review and update the information system, including the core database • Review and advise on the management structure of the Registry • Review and advise on human resource and legislation requirements • Training of staff • Assistance with data analysis and report generation for 2002-2006

  19. Promising • Meeting - April 2009 between CDC/PAHO Guatemala, Argentina, Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago • Field Assessment visit February 2010 CDC/PAHO • March Training in the use of ICD 10 to Medical Record Personnel (PAHO sponsored) • Assistance in publishing 10 year report • CDC/PAHO Report to be actioned.

  20. Future plans for this Group • Bahamas • Barbados • Cayman Island • Guyana • Jamaica • Trinidad and Tobago • Support from CAREC, PAHO, IARC • Forming a Caribbean Network for Cancer Registries and Cancer epidemiology

  21. Conclusion • Despite some evidence of incomplete registration, a heavy burden of cancer has been documented in Trinidad and Tobago. • Data are produced from which an evidence based National Cancer Control Programme is being implemented.
