DE3N 34 Communication: Analysing and Presenting Complex Communication
Purpose of the Unit • To develop Communication skills at SCQF level 7 that will meet needs of learners as they undertake the award • To assure Core Skill certification at SCQF level 6
Good Practice • Approaches contextualised to meet learner needs • Integrated assessment where appropriate
Not such good practice • Materials or tasks that are irrelevant or outdated • Changing or adding to evidence requirements • Leaving out elements of evidence requirements • Correcting and editing summative work
Outcome 1 • Text outdated or not relevant to award • Setting a rigid time limit • Asking for “extras” • Leaving out all or part of the evaluation • Assessing writing skills
Outcome 2 • Making allowances • Correcting and editing text
Outcome 3 • Individual oral presentations (of 20 minutes or more) • No detail on observation checklist • Group minute
Ideas for Outcome 1 • Model business report or section of a long report • Intended purpose/readership self-evident/explicit • Use of structured questions/worksheets • Provide a glossary/allow dictionaries • Short written/oral summary response report • Interviews, or supplementary oral questioning – scribing or recording of responses
Ideas for Outcome 2 • Integrate with assessment tasks for other units • Provide a framework of headings/structured questions for a report • Collect a portfolio of documents eg two shorter reports, meetings papers, web page/emails etc.
Ideas for Outcome 3 • End of course review meeting with recommendations • Meeting to discuss and evaluate report topics (each member to bring preparation notes) • Progress meeting (supported by diaries/logs recording each individual’s progress on course unit/s with specific points to be addressed as per agenda item)
Proposals • Update of specification, wording and notes to reflect developments in technology and industry • Outcome 1 – more flexible evaluation criteria • Outcome 3 – more flexible choice of oral interaction task (e.g. meeting, presentation, interview)
Workshop activity • Share experiences of any delivery issues • Comment /make suggestions on draft proposals
