The Beyster Institute As a self-sustaining part of the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego, the Beyster Institute seeks to: • advance and advocate employee ownership and entrepreneurship • achieve broader distribution of capital ownership to include segments of the population in which it would not normally appear. • promote building high performing businesses with inclusive ownership structures.

The AECF Work Groups • Funding from Annie E. Casey Foundation • In Place through 2009. • Groups Include members representing: • personal asset builders, credit unions, real estate trusts, worker cooperatives, ESOP advisors, community organizers, community development non-profits, and others. • The task is to work through differences and approaches and coordinate efforts related to wealth creation through shared ownership of business and real estate.
The Products • Shared ownership of businesses: • Statement of common purpose, • Research opportunities to link shared ownership to individual wealth creation, • Pilot Projects . • Shared ownership of real estate: • Raise awareness of the asset-building potential of shared equity home ownership, • Encourage policies that promote shared equity home ownership, • Explore other vehicles creating similar results.
Research Aspirations • Document the relationship between shared ownership and individual wealth building. • Explore the link between shared ownership of all types and stability in communities and families. • Connect shared ownership to outcomes that will give it priority in public policy.
