Our History – why things need to change! • In the 1950’s and 1960’s disabled people and their families were encouraged and in some cases forced to live and go to school away from their families. • Most of the decisions about disabled people’s lives were made by other people like doctors, teachers and relatives.
Taking Control of our Lives • Disabled people decided they wanted to be in charge of their own lives and to have their own voice so they set up disabled peoples organisation. • Disabled peoples organisations are run and controlled by disabled people • Disabled people have developed the motto Nothing about us without us
