Reading/Social Studies Reading – Instruction is designed to foster higher-level thinking using both literary and informational text Social Studies- Colonial America, Revolutionary War, and Government Vocabulary- Wonders and Greek and Latin words Word Study –Review six syllable types to syllabication and derivational to assist in reading and spelling
Writing/Science Writing- Narrative, Informational, Opinion writing each module (three modules per year), Fuzzy Mud, Notice and Note Grammar- Explicit instruction to be integrated into Writing Science- Working through the three CCPS units: Survivor, Earth Systems, and Earth and Space
5th Grade Math Carroll County Math Curriculum Unit 1- Geometry Unit2 – Place value, decimal computation, and metric conversion Unit 3- Multiplication of whole numbers and volume Unit 4- Division of whole numbers and customary measurement conversions Unit 5- Addition and Subtraction of fractions Unit 6- Multiplication and division of fractions Unit 7- Multiplying and dividing decimals Unit 8- Algebraic thinking and Coordinate planes Unit 9- Division standard algorithm
Formal Assessments • Science- MISA (Maryland Integrated Science Assessment) • MCAP- Will be given once this year in math and reading/writing.
Band • Please know that your student will be missing instruction during band practice. It is the student’s responsibility to make up the missed work. Arrival is also a good opportunity to make-up missed work.

Please volunteer! • All volunteer must be trained 7 school days before you are able to volunteer. This includes field trips • If you signed up at open house, please pick up a calendar on the table. • If you did not sign up and are interested in volunteering, please sign on the list on the table.
Grades Students’ responsibility Parent’s responsibility Check home access center frequently We input grades weekly Check with your child if assignments are marked NHI (not handed in) or are blank When in doubt, contact us as soon as possible • Complete assignments in a timely manner • Have a positive attitude • Always try his or her best • If assignments are missing or incomplete, take them home or use arrival time to finish
Field Trips • We are planning two field trips this year. A STEM trip will be in the Fall and a Humanities trip in the spring.
