  4. What is ICS? • UK government funded development programme • UK & local volunteers, aged 18-25 • Focused on three things: • Project impact • Volunteer personal development • Creation of active citizens

Who is Raleigh International? • Sustainable development charity • Raleigh challenges and inspires young people and communities living in poverty to create a sustainable future • Programmes focus on water & sanitation, protecting vulnerable environments & building resilient communities • Established in 1984 • 36,000 alumni from over 40 countries worldwide

India • 72% of Indians lack access to sanitation facilities • 186,000 children under 5 die from preventable diarrhoeal diseases every year • Health projects: improve access to water & sanitation. • Livelihoods/ Natural Resource Development: promote sustainable agricultural livelihoods in rural communities

  11. Tanzania • 67.9% of the population live below the income poverty line • 21 million do not have access to safe water • 20,000 children under five die each year from preventable diarrhoeal disease • Health projects: improve access to water & sanitation

  12. Nicaragua • 2.8 million people don't have access to adequate sanitation • Health projects: improve access to water & sanitation • Natural Resource Development projects: develop skills and capacities to manage natural resources and improve sustainable livelihoods in rural communities

Action at Home • As part of the International Citizen Service (ICS) volunteers are required to deliver an Action at Home project. • The aims of this project are to raise awareness about development issues and inspire others to create positive change. • By sharing their experience and what they have learned during their ICS placement, volunteers take the first step in becoming active global citizens.
