What are your personal and professional experiences of social media?
School Survey - June 2011 • Survey carried out in association with Adroit-e Research • Online survey completed by 354 pupils (mainly years 8, 9 and 10) and 44 teachers followed by data driven discussions • Main conclusions: • Vast majority of students use FB and have smart phones • Teachers are suspicious of uses within school but see the potential
Facebook Trial • Trial with two year 13 classes in History and Law
Opportunities: Anytime, anywhere • Students can access the pages easily using home PCs or phones
Opportunities: Independent learning • Quick links to websites/articles for further reading
Opportunities: Discussion and debate • Questions can be used to encourage discussion, to consolidate learning or to provoke debate • Great opportunity for citizenship – digital democracies
Challenges: Personal v professional • Keep them separate – set up new profiles using school email address • Never ‘friend’ a student • Encourage students to ‘like’ your Facebook page
Challenges: Professional conduct • Teachers have been sacked for inappropriate use of Facebook • Use your common sense! • Delete any inappropriate comments made by students and follow it up • Always keep an eye on the page and remove from FB if no longer being used • IT policy
Challenges: Lack of response • Some students don’t like mixing business with pleasure
Where do we go from here? • Digital presence of The John Warner School • Guide to setting up a Facebook page • IT Policy • Other social media sites such as Twitter, Youtubeetc • Teaching and learning project • Keep me informed
