HAPPY THURSDAY! Copy down tonight’s homework. Please get your folders.
TODAY, WE WILL: • Do a warm-up • Talk about what will be on tomorrow’s quiz • Take some “quick notes” on classifying matter
W ARM-UP As you watch this short video, about the aborted Red Bull Stratos launch, be aware of examples of matter and non-matter.
W ARM-UP As you watch this short video, about the aborted Red Bull Stratos launch, be aware of examples of matter and non-matter. OK – Now, write down three INTERESTING examples of matter that you saw and three examples of things that are not matter.
We’ll be talking a lot about PARTICLES in this unit. So, what is a particle? A particle is the smallest piece of a substance. 10/11 Obj: Describe pure substances and mixtures
A particle can be: • a single atom • a molecule, which is two or more atoms that are connected by chemical bonds.
A really small YOU swimming in a cup of water one particle of water (H2O) one atom of hydrogen (H) one atom of oxygen (O) another atom of hydrogen
All materials on earth are either made of a pure substance or a mixture of substances. Matter- Has mass, takes up space and is made of atoms Are all of the particles the same? YES NO Pure Substance Mixture
PURE SUBSTANCE Matter that is made of one kind of “thing” All of the particles are the same.
Mixtures • Definition: matter made of more than one kind of substance that are combined in the same container but not held together with chemical bonds . There are different PARTICLES in the container. Tank containing oxygen and hydrogen gases particle of oxygen particle of hydrogen
Mixtures • There are two types of Mixtures: • Heterogeneous Mixtures • Homogeneous Mixtures
Heterogeneous Mixtures • Definition: A mixture in which different materials can be distinguished easily.- not well-blended. • Examples: Granola Salad Dirt
Homogeneous Mixtures • Definition: a mixture in which the different substances are indistinguishable - you can’t see the different substances because it is well-blended. It looks the same everywhere. • Can also be called a SOLUTION. • Examples: Vinegar a gold ring
Matter- Has mass and takes up space Are all of the particles the same? YES NO Pure Substance Mixture Does it look the same throughout? YES NO HOMOGENEOUS HETEROGENEOUS EXAMPLES
BEFORE YOU LEAVE… • What kind of matter is: • Lucky Charms cereal • your table top • a shirt • distilled (pure) water • the gas in an oxygen tank • Godzilla • a piece of computer paper • a piece of lined paper
