Timeline • 13:05 – 9-1-1 caller reported “water gushing through a large hole” in the bottom of the dam, and several people were swimming around it. Law enforcement responded. • 20:38 – 9-1-1 caller reported a dam had structural damage and was possibly in danger of collapsing. Fire Department/EM responded. • 21:07 – State EOC notified. • 00:15 – DENR Inspector on Scene
Size Up - Situation • Water was gushing from the bottom of the dam. • Water level above dam was dropping at an estimated rate of 3”-5” per hour. • Water level was down approximately 2’-3’ upon EM arrival.
Size Up – The Dam 22 surface acres of water behind the dam 20’ tall 83 acre/ft = 3.6 million cubic ft 230’ long
Size Up – Worst Case Scenario H x 0.5=W at Breach
Size Up – Downstream 0.7 miles downstream.
Size Up – Downstream 1.6 miles downstream.

Where are the hazards? • 204 dams recognized in Randolph County. • 56 listed as high/intermediate hazard. • Only 4 have EAP’s. • 5,646 dams recognized in North Carolina.
What to Do to Be Ready(er) THE BASICS • Identify dam’s in your jurisdiction • Work with GIS • Identify potential problematic locations downstream in a worst case scenario. EXTRA CREDIT • Photograph and file • Work with dam owners and encourage EAPs. • Build predetermined layers for mass notification systems.
