Survival/Backpacking 2010
Why backpack? • Cheap Vacation (once you have the equipment) • For people who want to “get away from it all” • People who are interested in nature and or a workout
Where do you backpack? • National forest • Wilderness areas • National Parks • BLM • Each area has some benefits/disadvantages for backpacking
How do you backpack? • There is no one right way to backpack
How do you learn? • Just do it – hopefully with someone who is experienced • Resources: Books, Backpacker Magazine
What should you bring? Take five minutes and make your own list of stuff you would take with you if you were to go backpacking in the Rocky Mountains in the summer. Then we will compare your list to a what an experienced backpacker might take out.
Here is what I would bring - • 1. boots 13. knife 25. matches • 2. backpack 14. tent 26. water • 3. sleeping bag 15. food 27. first aid pack • 4. ground pad 16. zip lock bags 28. cookware • 5. toilet paper 17. rain gear 29. map • 6. extra socks 18. rope 30. hat and gloves • 7. compass 19. bandana 31. book • 8. bag for food 20. watch 32. water filter • 9. flashlight 21. sunscreen 33. camera • 10. bug spray 22. fuel • 11. toilet kit 23. stove • 12. sweat shirt 24. long underwear
Four Big Components: • 1. Boots
#2 – Tent – 3 season or 4 season? Four season Tent Three season tent Four season is really a one season tent – to heavy and hot decent weather.
#3 Sleeping Bag • Synthetic/Down • Synthetic will keep you warm if it gets wet – down will lose its warmth if it gets wet • Temperature rating is important – to hot and you have a miserable night – too cold and you could die.
#4 Backpack – Internal vs. External External – “old school” Internal – “modern” In general you can haul more “stuff” In general you have more range of motion
