  2. The Roman believed strongly in their form of government and fought fiercely to defend it.

  3. By treating people they conquered as allies, Rome was able to raise a large army.

  4. Wars were a great source of wealth. Many outsiders were loyal to Rome because they shared the spoils of war.

  5. Rome’s army was highly skilled. Citizens in it served for 10 years. They successfully used the “tortoise.” The legions included expert builders. Bridge building was a special skill of the army. Soldiers were expected to carry up to 80 pounds of equipment.

  6. To become a government official, success in the army was necessary. The highest honor a general could receive was a “triumph.” This was a parade through the streets after a victory in battle.
