Agenda - Overview of GT Independent Research and GT Intern-Mentor classes - Student Voices - Impact on College Admissions - Application Process - Questions
G/T Research Classes “What we are looking for is academic rigor and unique experiences. The GT Independent Research and GT Intern-Mentor programs provide the unique experiences that will set students apart in the college application process and the academic rigor for those students.” • Ms. Barbara Hall Assoc. Provost for Enrollment Services, NYU
G/T Research Mission The High School Gifted and Talented Research courses of GT Independent Research and GT Intern-Mentor empower students to contribute to the larger community by applying, creating, and evaluating knowledge in a specialized area of study.
Research Process • Study an area of interest by reading scholarly journals as would a professional researcher in the field of study. • Collaborate with a practicing professional in the field of study who serves as a project advisor or mentor. • Formulate an original research question to guide the primary research study.
Research Results • Develop an electronic research portfolio • Write a college-level research-based paper that synthesizes knowledge of the research topic. • Develop a product that communicates the results of the research process. • Present to an appropriate audience

Impact on Colleges • I am the counselor who will be reviewing the applications of students who apply to St. Mary’s from your high school. I received the letter you wrote which accompanied the abstract of XXXX’s project about sleep deprivation. I contacted you to say thank you for the information. It is really quite helpful. Some students do internships, projects etc, but not many of them ever make it clear to us the scope and the depth of their activities. I always tell them we don’t know what you have done unless you tell us.
Impact on colleges “I think it is great that you come here and make sure that each individual situation is working out. This type of class really helps the kids prepare for college.” Dr. William Gasarch UMCP Computer Technology Professor
Real World Application “School is obviously valuable, but internships and personal experiences are just as important because they teach students about the real world that they will soon be entering.” Yolanda Voss Owner, Yolanda Voss Fashion Gallery
Logistical Considerations: G/T Intern Mentor Program • Flexibility of schedule to accommodate extra-curricular activities and mentor placement for the 4-5 hours per week at the internship • Availability of mentor in chosen field of interest • Ability to interact with adults in a professional environment • Reliable transportation and car insurance
Application Process • Students express interest by completing application packet for G/T Research Courses. The application is located online at http:mrhsgtinfo.weebly.com • Students obtain teacher recommendations. • G/T Resource Teacher interviews students about their areas of interest and potential for original research.
