  1. Ecology As we look at the following pictures – identify any words that “fit” or come to mind.

  2. What is Ecology? • After looking at the pictures, how would YOU define Ecology. Write it down in NB • “ecos” = home • “ology” = study of • Ecology = the study of organisms and where they live

  3. What is an Ecosystem? • First, we need to define system. • Handout

  4. In your NB… • Explain your thinking. How did you decide whether something was considered a system or not a system? • System:an organized group of related objects or components that form a whole.

  5. Which ones are NOT Systems? • aquarium digestion cell phone • pile of sand food web A + B = C • Earth hurricane electrical circuit • grasshopper graph water cycle • Volcano seed human body • Soil bicycle D = M/V • Ocean Earth and moon box of nails

  6. Define Ecosystem in your NB • Ecosystem = a systemformed by the interaction of organisms with the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) environment. • Abiotic Biotic

  7. Video • Coral Reef Ecosystem • How might an abiotic factor affect a biotic factor in an ecosystem?

  8. Ecosystem Organization

  9. Organism • individual

  10. Population • same species living together

  11. Community • different populations living together

  12. Ecosystem • includes both biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors

  13. Biomes • group of ecosystems that have the same climate and similar communities

  14. Biosphere • Earth: land, water, air

  15. Ecosystem

  16. Other Vocabulary • Niche: An organisms role, or “job” in the ecosystem

  17. Other Vocabulary • Biodiversity – the variety of living organisms within an ecosystem.

  18. Biodiversity is a measure of the health of ecosystems

  19. What abiotic factors affect the biodiversity of an area? • Sunlight • Water • Temperature • Soil • Wind • Severe Disturbances • Which factor has the MOST affect on Biodiversity?

  20. What determines the location of ecosystems on Earth? • The climate of a region • Climate patterns are largely produced by the uneven heating of the planet by the sun.

  21. Thought Question… • Reflect on the biodiversity of the Tundra and Evergreen Forest biomes. Identify at least two reasons for the differences in biodiversity between these two places.

  22. Succession • Pioneer species – the first species to move into a disturbed area. • Succession – when species replace other species in a given area. • Primary succession – occurs where life has not existed before. • Secondary succession – occurs in areas that have previous growth

  23. Primary Succession

  24. Secondary Succession
