  3. Antitrust Laws • Due to public’s concerns, antitrust laws were enacted to stop the abuse of large monopoly companies • US Congress created the Interstate Commerce Commission to regulate the rates charged by the railroads

  4. James S. Hogg • His father, a brigadier general, died during the Civil War in 1862, and his mother died the following year. • In 1886 he became attorney general. • Hogg encouraged new legislation to protect the public. • He brought law suits to regain over a million and a half acres of land illegally taken by the railroad. • He took back control of the East Line and Red River Railroad from Eastern “Robber Barron” Jay Gould. • Depots station and rail lines were repaired or rebuilt. • Texas Railroad Commission was established. It set the rates and watched over railroad practices • Hogg was elected governor on this platform in 1890.

  5. Railroad Abuse • Sold land to some in checker board style, so that the land was given away at no cost • Charged different prices for passage to different people. This cut into the profit of the farmers / rancher. • Increase price of material increased the final sale price • Many farmers had to sell to big corperate
