GE-003-089 Revision of GE Assessment Policy
History • EO 595 (now, 1033) mandates periodic assessment of GE • Senate approved GE Assessment plan in 2004 (re: WASC 2003 visit) • 16 committees, one for each area • Each committee must have only current GE instructor representation • Timeline: three years • 4 areas yr 1; 8 yr. 2; synthesis yr. 3
Status • As of Nov 19, 2008, four committees have completed plans • Three of these committees have conducted assessments • Six committees have developed outcomes only • Two committees are still considering outcomes; four have never met
This Referral: • Decommission present GE Assessment committees, but keep the work • Create new Academic Senate, ad hoc GE Assessment Committee, separate from present standing GE Committee
Why This Referral Now • EO 1033 mandates development of learning outcomes for GE • WASC is expecting that GE Assessment plan is implemented • It is the right thing to do; it will help student learning
Advantages to New Structure • One committee instead of 16 • Committee does not have to reinvent wheel for each area; work can be consolidated • Administratively, easier to support one committee than 16 • Committee staffing consistency and ease • Can use existing data: GWT exams, capstone projects, etc.
Committee Composition • One faculty rep from each college (8) • One from ASI (1) • One from Undergrad studies (1) Support from: Undergraduate Studies, Institutional Research Assessment and Planning, & Faculty Center for Professional Development
