Measuringacademic success. Success Rate Seminar 20 AUGUST 2014
Factors influencing success • There are different factors that influence the success of our students and it can be grouped into two basic categories: • Uncontrollable / Un-Manageable • Controllable / Manageable
Uncontrollable / un-Manageable Factors • From an academic perspective this include • Schooling system • Registration • Transport • Housing • Text books purchases
Controllable / Manageable Factors • These are the elements within the academic environment that can and must be handled by the Academics • This include elements such as: • Selection criteria • Subject “placement” • Class room performance by lecturer • Assessment methods and techniques • Extra classes • Mentors • Extra tests • SDS training / involvement
Measuring Success • The question that remains is to determine the effect and impact of these factors on the success of the students. • The current system of evaluating the success and pass rates by looking at the Predicate, Exam marks and Final marks is basically conducting a post mortem. • The students passed or not and nothing could be done to change that. • The lecturers are requested / instructed to write report regarding the “bad”, “un- satisfactionary” performance, to what effect and or success.
HEDA Performance evaluation • Final Marks • Half Year • Full period • Exam • Final • Assessment's • Test’s • Assignments • Class attendance • Practical's • or as determined
Possibilities • Monitor the performance of the same students for the same subject for different assessments through the year. • Compare performance of same group of students for different subjects for every assessment. • Compare the performance of different groups for the same subject, including different lecturers. • Learning site comparison / evaluation • Assist in Lecturer comparison / evaluation / development • Student performance development monitoring • Early corrective action and measures for both staff and students • Non performing students identified and followed up by SDS and Finance cause less hassles at end of year • Yardstick / Measurement / Management for Faculty, Department, Qualification, Subject, Class group.
Work in progress To add the percentages for the ASSESSMENT as for FINAL MARKS. Further development to allow the following comparisons.
Statistics ? Tendency to look at numbers and percentages to determine good and bad performance of lecturer / students. Consider the following factors that influence the stats.
There has been 12 official cancellations of the 120 students registered for subject ABC 110T. If these students are reflected in group Z they do not have a negative effect on the average / pass rate. Then the situation is as follow:
A further 7 students were not attending any classes and also do not write the tests. These students are THEN moved to group Y WHERE they can be accounted for, and followed up by the relevant department/s. Therefore they do not have a further negative effect on the average / pass rate.
