Academic Success Your keys to achieving your academic goals
Success • Success: the progressive realization of a worthy goal (Earl Nightingale) • There is no alternative: Failure is not an option • Commitment: Deciding to Succeed • “This is for me!”
Set Your Goals! • Goal: “Someday I will fly in a plane I helped design” • Objectives (SMART): • Long-term: “I will be a design engineer at Cessna by August 2008” • Mid-range: “I will earn my degree in Aerospace Engineering at the U of Mn with a 3.5 GPA in May 2008” • Short-term: “I will earn a 3.75 GPA this semester”
You don’t just “get” a 3.75 GPA • You read assigned texts • You attend classes • You do homework • You write papers • You take quizzes and tests • Just like driving, you won’t pass the class by just reading the book or watching someone else.
College is a whole new ballgame! • Selective enrollment • Classes seldom repeat topics • Professors assume you’ve read the book • Professors assume you know things from previous classes • You’re homesick! • You discover you don’t have to attend class!
You need a new set of skills • Time Management • Note taking • “Make it your own” • Study skills • Problem Solving • Test taking
