  3. History of Carpet Manufacturers in India The first generation of carpet manufacturers in India were weavers in the imperial workshop of the Mughal Empire. The first carpet to reach India was imported by Babur from Persia, but his son Akbar set workshops in Agra and Fatehpur Sikri to weave rugs in India. After the Mughal dynasty, the British government patronized the weavers and opened handlooms in every part of the world.

And it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the story of Indian carpet export starts in this state that saw the setting of the first workshops. • Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh is the center of the handloom industry in Uttar Pradesh • Shahjahanpur carpets are generally black on a maroon background • Uttar Pradesh weavers produce luxurious carpets with attractive designs like geometrical patterns • Agra is the traditional center of carpet weaving and is specialized in the use of silk mixed with woolen yarn • The weavers of the Mirzapur-Badohi region can weave carpets of any design including Old Persian.
