  1. Independent Writing Task = 30 min

  2. Get a topic. • You decide your opinion & support your opinion • Everything you are doing in your R&W class and in GWE will help you with this part of the test.

  3. Structure of essay • Introduction • Paragraph 1: Reason 1 or Idea against • Paragraph 2: Reason 2 or Idea for • Paragraph 3 (maybe): Reason 3 or maybe you don’t need • Conclusion

  4. Intro needs: • Ahook/attention getter • Thesis statement • Map/tell the reader your plan

  5. Each body paragraph needs • Topic/Point • Examples/Information • Analysis/Explanation

  6. The conclusion needs to: • Refer back to the thesis/main idea • Summarize your main points • Remind the reader of your attention getter

  7. Method • Read the question (1 min.) • Make an outline/plan (thesis statement, your topics for the 2-3 paragraphs, idea for attention getter) (5 min.) • Write (20 min.) • Check for (4 min.)

  8. Check for/Make sure you have: • Ideas: • A thesis & plan at the end of the intro. • 1 topic only in each paragraph • Repeat your main idea several times in your essay • Grammar: • Verb tenses, articles, singular/plural • Sentence structure: • Run-Togethers, Comma Splices, Fragments • Connectors/Language: • A variety of connectors (especially transition words), say the same thing in different ways
