“Soft” C Rule • When you hear a (s) sound before any sound made by the letters e, i, or y, use the letter c to make the (s) sound. • (s) > e, i, y = letter c • Examples: • city, cell, nice, cycle, place
“Hard” C vs. “Soft” C Hard c Soft c • (k) > a, o, u, or any consonant = letter C • The (K) sound (hard C), usually comes before the letters a, o, u • cap • cope • cup • (s) > e, i, or y = letter C • When you hear a (s) sound before the letters e, i, or y, use the letter c to make the (s) sound. This is soft c! • ice • cell • cycle
Prefix • A PREFIX is a letter or letters we add BEFORE the base word. • Each PREFIX has its own meaning. • When we add a PREFIX, we do NOT change the spelling of the base word.
