Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System, San Diego, California Program Objectives Purpose Results • To establish a post-graduate specialty training program in pharmacy informatics at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. • Develop an understanding of the principles of the use of pharmacy information in an integrated healthcare system. • Develop an understanding of healthcare technology development, evaluation, implementation and maintenance at local, regional and national levels. • Develop skills in research design and data analysis to assess pharmaceutical-related economic, clinical and humanistic health outcomes. Length of Residency 12 months Number of positions One Candidate Qualifications • Pharm.D. Degree AND completion of first year • (PGY-1) General Pharmacy Practice Residency or equivalent experience. Outcomes and Learning Experiences Discussion • With the prevalent use of information systems and technology in healthcare, there is a need for pharmacists with clinical backgrounds to be trained in information technology development and management. Specialty training in informatics will enable pharmacists to successfully integrate pharmacy services with information technology. The VA San Diego Healthcare System has started a PGY2 Pharmacy Informatics residency aimed at training future pharmacy informatics leaders.
