Government The complex of offices, personnel, and processes by which a state is ruled, by which its public policies are made and enforced.
Public Policies All of those things a government decides to do.
State A body of people, living in a defined territory, organized under a government and having the power to make and enforce law without the consent of any higher authority.
Sovereign Supreme, absolute power of a state within its own territory.
Unitary government Form of government in which all the powers of the government are held by a single agency, as in Great Britain; local governments are completely subordinate to have only those powers given to them by the central government.
Federal Government- (Federalism) Form of government with governmental powers divided between a central government and several regional governments; this geographically based division of powers is made by an authority superior to both the central and the regional governments.
Confederation Form of government in which an alliance of independent states creates a central government of very limited power; the member states have supreme authority over all matters except in those few areas in which they have expressly delegated power to the central government.
Presidential Government Form of government characterized by a separation of powers between independent and coequal executive and legislative branches, as in the U.S.
Parliamentary Government Form of government in which the executive leadership (usually, a prime minister and cabinet) is chose by and responsible to the legislature (parliament), as well as being members of the legislature, as in Great Britain.
Dictatorship Form of government in which those who rule cannot be held responsible to the will of the people.
Democracy System of government in which supreme authority rests with the people.
Direct Democracy A democratic system of government in which the people participate directly in decision making.
Representative Democracy System of government in which a small group of persons chose by the people to act as their representatives to expresses the popular will.
Anarchy The total absence of government.
