Purpose of Introduction: (a) Get audience interested (b) Show understanding (c) Show you want to read to them (d) Show enthusiasm
The first sentence is the attention getter • In life we are faced with challenges... • We are familiar with the story of... • Growing up can be difficult... • Freedom is the best part of life... The attention getter gives the audience an idea of what they will hear. It allows the audience and the judge an opportunity to adjust to the topic.
The second sentence - the title and author. • Sandra Michaels shows how life is not always what it seems in “The Baker’s Children” • In the Grimm’s Fairytale, Princess and the Pea, we find the children facing obstacles... • “The Right Way” by Mary Place shows parents that sometimes children face problems in their own way... The title and author is required.
The third and/or fourth sentence Information the audience needs to understand the selection. Include things that have happened before the story starts. Include information that was left out. Add any information you think needs to be said.
