Purpose:. Provide students who may not be considering medical careers, the opportunity to become familiar with them. Show students the skills they will need for these careers Highlight resources available to them in their school and community

Purpose: • Provide students who may not be considering medical careers, the opportunity to become familiar with them. • Show students the skills they will need for these careers • Highlight resources available to them in their school and community • Expose teachers to the opportunities available in these same fields and enhance their ability to advise and counsel their students. • Promote positive relationships between Mayo staff, High School Teachers, Students and the community
Week 1: Professional Development • Patient centered care • Mayo Clinic history • Communication – presentation skills • Case scenarios on workforce situations • People skills in the workplace/transferable skills • Professionalism (dress and attitude) • Networking opportunities
Week 2: Clinical and Research areas exploration • Cytogenetics (FISH and Chromosomes) • Molecular Biology • Hands on opportunities to run DNA gels • Microbiology • Central clinic labs and biomedical sciences • Phlebotomy
Week 3: Allied Health Careers • Useful academic resources • Define opportunities for continued growth • Allied Health Career options • Overview of 75 career training at Mayo • Hands experience: respiratory care, sonography, physical therapy, radiography, nuclear medicine. • Computer use in a professional organization • (blogs and Facebook)
Student commitment and advantages • Students participated for 3 weeks – Monday- - Thursday from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM • Lunch was provided • Help with “dress code” was provided • Students were paid stipend • Students were provided public transportation assistance
Teacher commitment and advantages • Teachers participated for 3 weeks – Monday- Thursday 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM • Lunch was provided • Teachers were paid a stipend according to district pay scales
Outcomes • Students are now aware of professional opportunities in a medical setting and see the path and skills needed to participate in these professions. • Students are aware and encouraged to pursue the high level of academics necessary to achieve these professional goals. • Students are inspired to work toward these goals. • Teachers are also aware of these opportunities and more knowledgeable in their counsel of support of student achievement and direction to their goals.
Follow Up • Students and teachers will gather after first month of new school year to draft a meeting schedule • Students will continue to meet with volunteer teachers through the year in order to support them as they decide to take Honors/AP level courses • Students will participate in monthly seminars that highlight careers and academics
