Transcendentalist • Believed that the most important truths of life could not be summed up in a clear and simple theology but actually “transcended” or went beyond human understanding.
Educational Reform • The modern Public School system began in the 1830’s in Massachusetts • Puritan colonist had educated their children so this was a natural place for education reform to start (There was a history of it)
The Mentally Ill and Handicapped • For centuries the mentally ill had been treated like criminals and stigmatized as “insane.” • Before this time period they were • Feared • Imprisoned • Tortured
Women’s Rights • The industrial revolution had freed women from the home • Their new role in the workplace allowed them to fight towards equal rights • Being part of the workforce gives you a louder voice
Abolition • Cotton Gin had led to a great need for slave labor • Some Southerners opposed slavery • There were many different approaches • Abolition groups formed in the North and South alike

Things You Need 2 Keep In Mind • Make sure that you identify the different reformers (Who, What, Where, When, Why) • Connect their ideas to current day, “How did my reformer change America?” • Answer the question: Was the reform successful? • Answer the question: Does the U.S. need reform today?
