DAY 1 Monday (Lesson 1) The HOOK • Marvel/DC Heroes Tribute video http://youtube.com/watch?v=-WFZC1LCHGc • Discuss among the class: • Media interpretation of superheroes • Discover their knowledge of superheroes • Concept of Good VS Evil • Stereotypes • Web Diagram of Superheroes • Using WEBQUEST, start to research your issue that you want your superhero to change about the world • Homework: Think of what you want changed about the world that your comic can focus on…
Falling In Love Saving the World Villains Characters’ & identities Saving Problems Heroes Deal with Conflicts: saving kids, fighting bad guys, getting rid of world issues (poverty, rape, drug abuse, global warming, violence etc) Good Vs Bad Love and Death SUPERHEROES Powers Strong What they look like Weapons, magical powers, strengths Weaknesses: curses, barriers etc… Handsome/Beautiful Special Marks: scars, burns, tatoos etc…

DAY 3Building the Comic Book • The building of the comic strip, including the information gathered from previous classes. • The students get to materialize what they wish to express about themselves to the other students. • http://www.ugo.com/channels/comics/heromachine/classic.asp
Building the Comic Book • information gathered from Webquests and the different characters • What they saw as important i.e. pollution, poverty, hunger • Use the link to brainstorm the ideas on their character i.e. what they envision it as representing and looking like
DAY 3 CONT… • Students can draw their own superhero OR they can use pictures they find online or in magazines. • Let the students know they can be as creative as possible! • For example • -They can choose to include music they would like to play in the background as they are presenting their comic.
OUR SUPERHERO • Superhero #1: • Super Clean Planet Boy • Fights off evil carbon dioxide and smog that fills our air with his Super Ultra Air Cleaner as his secret weapon • He can’t fight to his full ability unless he’s charged with Fresh Air and gets lots of Sun throughout the day. • His weaknesses: bad weather, dirty air and pollution • What he’ll change about the world: Clean up the air humans breathe and help slow down the deterioration of the OZONE layer. DAY4Presentation • Criteria to follow • Check grammar, vocabulary, use of plot, theme, characterization, creativity • Story Structure (i.e. climax, foreshadowing etc.) • Presentation: is there a recognizable conflict? How is it dealt with? • Plagiarism: ensure there is nothing unoriginal about their superhero plot or character (copying symbols, plots, stories, characters etc) The presentation is the key element of this project. Everything the children have learned about story structure and language arts must be incorporated into the comic book they’ve created!
