From melting pot to mosaic  America welcomed immigrants from every country in the world and became known as the "melting pot" because these immigrants were said to melt into the American culture and quickly become American, losing their original national identity. This view of the United States is now outdated as the citizens of this very diverse, yet unified country have come to realize that it is made up of a great number of different populations, to make up a "mosaic" of many different colors. Despite disagreements, racism and a fear of the "other," America is founded on tolerance and is constantly struggling toward greater equality. MINORITIES African Americans arrived in the US as slaves in the 16th and 17th centuries and slowly achieved freedom and legal equality.However, blacks and other minorities-Asian, Cuban, Mexican, etc.-who are often economically disadvantaged, suffer from discrimination in many aspects of their lives: employment, social services, justice.... Although progress has been made over the years with many minorities and women in important positions in government and business, there is still much work to be done to change the attitudes of people . RECENT IMMIGRATION Since the 1960s, most of the incoming people have come from Latin America and Asia. Many of the Asian immigrants and their children are today recognized for their excellent performance in school, business, and science. In more recent years the US has made it more difficult for illegal immigrants to remain in the country. THE AMERICAN IDENTITY Nearly all Americans have a sense of their immigrant heritage . They identify with their background by observing some traditions, beliefs, holidays and food ... LANGUAGE The United States has no official language, although English is of course the native language of the vast majority of Americans born in the US. With Spanish­-speaking immigrants from Mexico and Central America, Puerto Rico, and Cuba (Hispanics), Spanish is spoken by about 20 million people .
