Congenital and Secondary Syphilis The appearance of the fundus after acute infection is similar to retinitis pigmentosa-- with pigmentary clumping through out the retina. However, there are many other retinal findings with syphilitic chorioretinitis including arterial occlusion, macular edema, macular star with neuroretinitis, retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, big blind spot syndrome. (A)Chorio-retinal pigment clumping in someone withcongenital syphilis.This individual has chorio-retinal changesfrom congenital syphilis. Although some of the pigment is in dots-there are also small pigmentary clumps. (B)Severe syphilitic retinitis.This individual had severe syphiliticretinitis with major changes in the retina, narrowing of the retinal vessels and optic disc pallor. The residue is a chorioretinitis associated with pigment.
